TEN QUOTES TO CELEBRATE THE AMERICAN POET, ''THEODORE ROETHKE'', ON HIS BIRTHDAY !

THEODORE ROETHKE, EMINENT AMERICAN POET OF 1940s n 50s OF THE LAST CENTURY,WHOSE INFLUENCE OVER THE SUBSEQUENT POETS WAS OVERWHELMING, WAS BORN THIS DAY, MAY 25, 1908, IN SAGINAW, MICHIGAN, USA. !

Born to Otto Roethke,a gardener who had a large farm for the production of vegetables n fruits in Greenhouse Method for market export and Helen Huebner , Theodore Had a rather modest schooling which somehow paved the way for Michigan State College from where the poet had graduated and made it to Harvard Law School only to abandon the course midway.

Theodore Had Experienced Tragedies As His Father and His Uncle Died Prematurely When The Poet Was Just A Teenager And Such Losses Had Left An Indelible Imprint On The Young Poet's Psyche That He Often Gave Prominence In His Poems!

Roethke Had Had The Priviledge Of Living Amid Nature And His Childhood Days Spent Watching His Father Grow Vegetables Organically By Greenhouse, Remained One Of The Oft Recurring Theme In His Poetry, especially, His First Book of Poems Titled, 'OPEN HOUSE' .
Roethke's Poetry Has A Rather Abundance Of Natural Imagery Having Larger Meanings.

'THE WAKING' , 'FAR FIELD' are his other notable works.

Theodore Roethke Won One Pulitzer Prize and Two National Book Award, amongst various other awards, fellowships, scholarships. . .et.al !

Roethke Is Widely Believed As The First Notable Pillar of A Rather New Form Of Poetry, Known As 'CONFESSIONAL POETRY' -- poems that amplify the Subjective Treatment Of A Poet's Personal Life n Experiences And Thus Markedly Shift Away From The Eliotian Theory of Impersonality or Objective Treatments of Themes Impersonal In Nature!

This had of course put sort of limitations on the range of themes taken up by Roethke and This was something for which he was/is subjected to biting criticism!

Roethke taught at various american universities and had had many extented lecture tours in n out of the states.

At the age of 55, Theodore Roethke Died of A heart attack.

His Legacy Was Greatly Carried On By Some of The Brilliant Poets of America Like ANNE SEXTON, SYLVIA PLATH, ROBERT BLY, JAMES DICKEY, JAMES WRIGHT, STANLEY KUNITZ . . . . .!
