His Seminal Book Happens To Be 'LIFE STUDIES' , Which ,as some of the best critics considered, Is The Greatest Contribution To The Modern Poetry After 'The Waste Land' Of T.S.ELIOT !

He was greatly influenced by Three Poets, ELIZABETH BISHOP, ALLEN TATE n WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS .
His early poems were written under the influence of Allen Tate's Formalism.Later During 60s his poetic diction became more personal and colloquial and he gave a rather open structure to his poems thus freeing them from the stricter pattern of formalism and bringing free verse forms as a potent medium to express one's personal experiences unchecked !
Such marked shift in style was more a result of his fascination for William Carlos Williams' innovative use of language!

Robert Lowell Happened To Be The Greatest Poet Of His Generation And Had A Clear Sway Over The American Poetry Written In Late 50s and 60s n Early 70s(1973).

He influenced, as is believed, Poets of the 60s n 70s in great measures and continues to do so even today !

Amongst His Famous Disciples, Two Got An International Acclaim : SYLVIA PLATH n ANNE SEXTON.

Apart From Being An Author, Robert Lowell Was Also An Activist And Had Participated With Great Enthusiasm In Civil Rights Movement and Anti War Movement. His Pacifist Approach Made Him All The More Beloved Amongst The Readers as well as The General Intelligentsia.
His Pacifism Was Not A Product Of 60s, Rather His Was The Same During The Second World War Which He Strongly Opposed And Greatly Criticised The American Establishment's Pro-active Role Into The War. Due To His Role As An Objector(of war) , He Was Imprisoned For Nearly Six Months.
He Was A Vocal Critic Of Vietnam War.

'LAND OF UNLIKENESS' , 'LORD WEARY'S ' , 'NEAR THE OCEAN' , 'THE DOLPHIN' , 'DAY BY DAY' , 'IMITATIONS' , 'LIFE STUDIES' are some of his finest works.

Robert Lowell Had A Great Sense Of History And One Of The Prominent Themes Of His Writings Was A SORT OF FUSION OF HISTORY i.e. PAST AND PRESENT !
He Believed The Great Utility Of History As An Important Instrument In Assessing or Examining The Present !

His Another Focus Was On Personal Life n Its Myriad Experiences That He Gave Pretty Much Vent-outs In His Poems. And, Such Emphasis Upon Personal Life As The Subject Matter For Poetry , Led To The Origin Of A Rather New Genre/Category Of Poetry Called 'CONFESSIONAL POETRY' !
Robert Lowell's Magnum Opus, 'LIFE STUDIES' Became Sort Of The Bible For Confessional Poetry Writers !

Apart From Winning The Pulitzer Prize Twice, Lowell Also Won The NATIONAL BOOK AWARD and The NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD.
