EZRA POUND IS SUCH A NAME WITHOUT WHICH WE CAN'T DO ANY PROPER ESTIMATION OF THE MODERN ERA IN LITERATURE WRITTEN IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE,WHETHER IT BE IN BRITAIN OR AMERICA !
EZRA POUND,ARGUABLY MORE THAN ANY INDIVIDUAL,HAD IMPACTED THE VERY COURSE OF MODERN ENGLISH LITERATURE!An american by birth,Pound spent more time in Europe though!
He had stay first in VENICE(ITALY) and his last stay too was VENICE where he breathed his last.
He lived in LONDON,PARIS AND RAPELLO(ITALY).
As an expatriate american he came to europe for a rather longer stay and trying his luck in writing ,when he got blank from american publishers.IT WAS HIS SECOND VISIT TO EUROPE IN 1908 THAT MET WITH SUCCESS PLUS RENOWN.
Today Is Ezra Pound's Birthday !
EZRA POUND,IN TERMS OF INFLUENCING ART AND ARTIST,WAS SUPREME IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE LAST CENTURY !AS A POET HE REMAINS COMPLEX,THOUGH!AS A MENTOR HE WAS MATCHLESS.HE HAD AN EYE TO SPOT ARTISTIC TALENTS AND ENCOURAGING SUCH TALENTS,GROOMING THEM AND ULTIMATELY SEEING THEM AS SUPERSTARS !For Example- Ezra Pound Supported and Suggested Authors Like T.S.ELIOT, JAMES JOYCE, D.H.LAWRENCE, HEMINGWAY -to cite a few literary stalwarts !
His use of Precision In Terms of Imagery ,His word-economy n his sparse diction and above all ,his DIRECTNESS in presentation have heralded the Modernism In Poetry Writing In English Language,both in England n America.
He Shaped Such Movements In Literature As CUBISM,IMAGISM,POST-CUBISM,VORTICISM n others and invented a totally new plus striking craftmanship.
A Polyglot,he was the first major author to incorporate a line or two from Latin,German,French. . .etc. every now n then in works written in english.
He was also a great translator and had often stressed on the importance of the art of translation as a potent medium of cultural exchange.
He also equated an age of great literature with that of translation!
He was sort of fascinated with everything Italian,had spent a major chunk of life there and was greatly impressed with Roman Civilization n Culture that he often referred to in his works.
He was also a naive in theorizing or assuming new ideas etc. as is evident from his outright support of FASCISM and MUSSOLINI in the run up to the second world war,considering fascism as a better form of governance fit for economical amelieoration of the masses! He indulged in regular broadcasts ranting against America and eulogizing Italy n Mussolini during the second world war and that led him being charged n tried for Treason by the American authority as he was extradited to The United States after the end of the war.
Instead of being incarcerated he was sent to a mental care,ST. ELIZABETH'S in Washington where he had to stay for twelve years as he was declared Insane n unfit to answer or plead against the charges levelled!
In 1958 after his dis discharge ,he again went to Italy n lived there till death in 1972 in Venice at the age of 87.
His major works include THE CANTOS, HUGH SELWYN MAUBERLY, EXULTATIONS, THE SPIRIT OF ROMANCE. .et.al .
Despite the disgrace he endured due to his overt pro-fascist rants n his being declared insane, his contributions in moulding the very character of modern british and american literature remains Unquestionable !
TRULY,EZAR POUND WAS A LITERARY GODFATHER !
