''Let me fall /
in love one last time, i beg them. /
Teach me mortality, frighten me /
into the present. Help me to find /
the heft of these days./ ''
'THE GREAT FIRES' By JACK GILBERT.

At 87, Poet Jack Gilbert Has Died.He was suffering from the Alzheimer's disease for a decade or so.He Breathed His Last In Berkeley,California.
He was unique in many respects and was rated amongst the best of American Poets In 60s and afterward. He Wrote Very Little In Comparision To Other Contemporaries,Yet His Gift Of Putting The Complex Subject Matters Through Very Simple Plus Lucid Diction,Had Earned Him A Rather Special Place In The Pantheon Of Modern American Poets !
New York Times while reviewing his last work last year, had described Jack Gilbert as 'INESCAPABLY GIFTED' poet.
Gilbert was highly praised ,after the publication of his first poetry book, 'VIEWS OF JEOPARDY' in 1962.The Book, VIEWS OF JEOPARDY, Won Him The Prestigeous YALE YOUNGER POET AWARD.
Gilbert also won the National Book Critics Circle Award and was shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize For Poetry twice.
He was living away from the public gaze and his such habit of aloofness was quite surprising to all, but, it seemed that Jack Gilbert Was Very Fond Of Such 'SELF-IMPOSED ISOLATION' !
On a Guggenheim Fellowship He Toured As Many As 15 Countries Of Europe Lecturing On American Literature. Later on he as a member of US' STATE DEPARTMENT, toured many countries popularizing and educating about American Literature.
He was born on November 13, 1925 in Pittsburg,Pennsylvania and at a rather young age,due to bad financial condition, had to work as exterminator and door to door salesman.
Later he got admitted at Pittsburg University and had finished his formal education.
His poems often have the themes of his native Pittsburg .He also wrote about the themes of love n sex n alienation of modern man.
He is admired for the simplicity plus the clarity of tone and tenor.
His Poems Also Reflect His Empathy For People At Large as the following lines exemplify : -
''IMAGINE HOW IMPOSSIBLE IT WOULD BE / TO LIVE IF SOME PEOPLE WERE / ALONE AND AFRAID ALL THEIR LIVES. /''
Jack Gilbert.
